Sustainable Living at CampusKey: Tips for Using Utilities Wisely

As your home-away-from-home, we’re all about making your stay not only comfortable but also eco-friendly. That’s right, even though water and electricity are included in your stay, it doesn’t mean we should forget about our responsibility to Mother Earth. So, let’s dive into some tips on how to use utilities sustainably and reduce our environmental footprint while enjoying all the perks of CampusKey living!

  1. Conscious Showering: Let’s start with one of the easiest ways to save water – taking shorter showers. We know, we know, nothing beats a long, relaxing shower after a busy day. But, consider keeping it under 5 minutes to conserve water. And while you’re at it, why not turn off the tap while you lather up? Every drop saved counts!
  2. Lights Off, Energy Saved: Lights are essential, but leaving them on when not needed wastes energy. Make it a habit to switch off lights when you leave your room or common areas.  Let’s light up the room while keeping our carbon footprint small!
  3. Unplug and Save: Did you know that even when electronics are turned off, they can still consume energy if they’re plugged in? It’s called standby power, and it’s a sneaky energy thief! So, remember to unplug chargers, laptops, and other electronics when they’re not in use. Your  planet will thank you!
  4. Mindful Laundry Practices: Laundry day is inevitable, but there are ways to make it more sustainable. Opt for full loads to maximize efficiency and use cold water whenever possible. Air-dry your clothes instead of using the dryer, not only saving energy but also extending the life of your garments. Plus, who doesn’t love that fresh air smell?
  5. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: It’s not just about using utilities wisely; it’s also about reducing waste. Embrace the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle. Cut down on single-use plastics, bring your reusable water bottle, and recycle whenever possible. Let’s work together to keep our CampusKey community green and clean!
  6. Spread the Word: Lastly, don’t keep these tips to yourself! Share them with your fellow residents and encourage everyone to join in on the sustainable living journey. Together, we can make a significant impact and inspire others to do the same.

Remember, small actions add up to big changes. By adopting these simple yet effective practices, we can all play a part in preserving our planet for generations to come.

IMPROVING THE TRANSITION TO HIGHER EDUCATION

CampusKey Student Living is dedicated to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of students. Today, we’re reflecting on the latest report, ‘Improving the Transition to Higher Education,’ published by Unite Students in collaboration with Higher Education Student Support Champion Professor Edward Peck. This comprehensive study, based on expert roundtables, individual interviews, desk research, and sector case studies, offers crucial recommendations for schools, colleges, and universities.

Implications for Student Accommodation

The lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people is undeniable. While some students have adapted well, many are still grappling with its effects. A recent study by the Institute of Education revealed that 42% of 12-15-year-olds experienced a decline in social and emotional development during the pandemic.

Additionally, with the rise in mental health issues and the ongoing cost of living crisis, educational institutions must work harder to meet students’ changing needs. This report provides valuable insights on better supporting students during their transition to higher education. Here are four key takeaways for student accommodation teams:

1. Focus on Engagement and Belonging

New students face the dual challenge of adapting to new learning methods while living independently and making new friends. The report suggests prioritizing the development of a sense of belonging and engagement within the university community. This could involve extending the settling-in period both in accommodation and on campus, gradually introducing new study skills.

2. Promote Coherent Social Integration

Given the pandemic’s impact on social development, ensuring that social integration opportunities are well-coordinated during the first few weeks of term is essential. Accommodation teams and private providers are crucial in helping students settle in and make friends. Closer collaboration with student unions, academic departments, and other university sectors can streamline communication and help students find appropriate events and opportunities. This approach is particularly beneficial for neurodivergent students.

3. Address the Cost of Living Crisis Creatively

The cost of living crisis has significantly affected students, often limiting their social opportunities and making independent living more challenging. Creative, targeted initiatives can make a real difference during the initial weeks. Sharing successful strategies can benefit the wider student community, and we encourage you to reach out if you have effective solutions to share.

4. Foster an Inclusive Environment

Ensuring every student feels welcome and at home is vital. Student life can be alienating, especially for those who feel different from their peers. The report highlights the importance of considering students’ cultural needs, drawing from initiatives like the University of Kent’s “Living Black at Kent.” Student accommodation must provide a safe, friendly base fundamental to student well-being and academic success.

Our Commitment at CampusKey

At CampusKey, we are committed to supporting students from day one. Our Mentor Programme and Community Connections/workshops offer peer support, and our teams are trained to create a supportive environment. We continuously seek ways to enhance the support we provide to new students. We aim to create a nurturing environment that fosters student success and well-being throughout their higher education journey.

KINDNESS FACTORY: GIVE, GRAB AND GO

KINDNESS FACTORY: GIVE, GRAB AND GO

Our vision is to make an impact by creating a better, more successful, more connected and fulfilled future And in this process also to give back, be kind, and encourage entrepreneurs.

When President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a nationwide Level 4 lockdown with the closure of restaurants with immediate effect, we knew we had to step up, get our community together and support local restaurants and their waiters.

Every week our community gets together on campus for a family feast. We connect, celebrate and collaborate with some good food. With the new regulations, we decided instead of pressing pause on our family feast, we can turn them into take-away events. And so, grab & go was born.

How does it work? Every week each campus orders food from a local restaurant for their give, grab and go event. To attend the event, our students have to bring a small donation. CampusKey matches the amount raised by the students and donates everything to the restaurants’ waiters.

We are on a mission to make the world a kinder place through random acts of kindness. If you have an amazing community project, we would love to get involved.

THE ULTIMATE STUDENT COLIVING EXPERIENCE

THE ULTIMATE STUDENT COLIVING EXPERIENCE

The CampusKey team recently unveiled exciting new designs reframing mixed-use urban properties in a drive to change the Student coliving scene in Stellenbosch.

CampusKey, who is the industry leader in Student Accommodation spaces in South Africa, believe that their buildings are the blueprint for the urban campus of the future. In Stellenbosch, the redevelopment of their Bordeaux building offers everything a student needs to learn, collaborate, work, and most importantly thrive.

The new development estimated at R75 million, strategically located within walking distance of Stellenbosch University campus, boasts 4000sqm of single occupancy luxury units, with each unit featuring a fully equipped kitchen and ensuite bathroom. With a selection of units ranging from 21sqm to 30sqm and an array of complimenting facilities, the CampusKey team’s emphasis will be on delivering carefully curated spaces to help their students thrive and achieve success in all aspects of their life.

The CampusKey model is based on Gen-Z behaviour, which informs the design philosophy of the architectural and interior design team. CampusKey Student CoLiving hubs are designed to enhance a sense of community between students and their peers, with contemporary social spaces featuring food and drink experiences, break-away lounges, co-working spaces for groups or quiet study pockets, state of the art gym, gaming zones, electric bike rentals, parking, laundry areas and 24/7 reception.

Managing Director, Leon Howell, said “Bordeaux will be the most innovative and exciting experience students can imagine. In addition to the energetic and inspiring vibe which encourages connectivity among students, guests and locals. Our team is focused on service excellence and understanding the needs of all our guests.

CampusKey prioritizes the wellbeing and safety of their students. Monthly mentorship sessions, community outreach projects and sustainability drives are part of CampusKey’s philosophy of creating an environment where students can thrive, stay informed and participate in their community by fostering strong connections.

Howell also added “When CampusKey reimagines old building or develops a new one, we look at creative ways to mix communities and uses. Our diversity and energy make our locations more attractive, resilient and sustainable. This understanding is at the heart of what we do, it is our mission.

CampusKey acquires, develops, designs, owns and operates all of its properties. Within this ecosystem CampusKey has the added advantage to deeply understand the needs and behaviours of our students and thus curate every aspect of our offering in PBSA. CampusKey is proud to be the #1 student coliving host, with a current portfolio of 7 campuses in South Africa making them the largest student coliving provider.

INTRODUCING THE BORDEAUX COLOUR PALETTE

INTRODUCING THE BORDEAUX COLOUR PALETTE

We believe that great design should be accessible to everyone. The new development, Bordeaux, is conveniently located in the heart of Stellenbosch. The impressive 4000 square metre development offers a meeting place for students, young professionals and foodies.

CampusKey is all about curating every aspect of our member’s experience. When looking at the interior design of our new building, our design team focused on enhancing productivity, collaboration, motivation and positivity. According to Celesté Havenga, our Architectural, experience and design expert, “Colour therapy was my main focus when selecting the colour palette for Bordeaux. In our increasingly stressful world, your private space needs to be a sanctuary for rest and healing, whereas our social spaces should leave you feeling stimulated and energized.”

Colour Therapy is based on the principles of psychology and research into colour and light, which investigates our individual and universal relationship with colour and how specific hues affect our physiological, mental, and emotional state.

“The specific colours and combinations were inspired by nature and chosen to create a sense of harmony and well-being, tailoring the space to meet our member’s personal needs. With colour therapy in mind and the vast implied wellness benefits, the colour palette was curated to increase energy levels in some spaces while promoting relaxation and restorative sleep, in others,” says Celesté.

BORDEAUX COLOUR PALETTE:

Blue is among the most calming colours in the palette. It relaxes the mind and slows down the heart rate.

Green offers a deep sense of renewal, self-control and harmony. It is soothing and restful on the eye. It can help you relax mentally as well as physically and helps alleviate depression, nervousness and anxiety.

Orange symbolizes sunshine and nature. Orange and all its shades pretty much have a positive effect on the psyche. It can stimulate hunger, enthusiasm and creativity.

Purple colour schemes work well in areas that inspire creativity. It is uplifting but also calming to the mind and nerves.

Celesté believes that “Choosing the right shade in terms of hue, light reflectance value and chroma plays an essential part in creating a sense of harmony. Finding a balance between colour harmony and what is currently trending plays a vital role in creating spaces which our members can relate to, spaces that inspire, push the boundaries and evokes a sense of joy.”

Bordeaux is planned to open its doors in early January 2022 and this will be the most innovative and exciting experience one can imagine.

COVID-19: CAMPUSKEY DOING THEIR PART

CAMPUSKEY GETS VACCINATED

CampusKey has made it their mission over the past year to ensure everybody can be confident we’ve got all the proper procedures in place to feel secure during Covid-19. Throughout this pandemic, our excellent on-site teams worked hard to make sure that we adapted to every challenge thrown at us.
As a result, only 3% of our students across South Africa tested positive for COVID-19, and we have had zero outbreaks in our buildings.

According to Lize Burns, our Community Manager, “We know that now, more than ever, students are looking for a safe, secure and authentic university experience, and we can provide it.
We are happy to report that more than 60% of our students and team is vaccinated. In our mission to reach a 100% vaccination rate, we will have on-site vaccination stations for the remainder of the year, and we will continue to encourage students and team members to be responsible and get their jab!

CAMPUSKEY MEETS SCHOON EATERY

CAMPUSKEY MEETS SCHOON EATERY

Iconic Schoon Eatery opens its 8th eatery in South Africa in the brand new CampusKey Bordeaux building, located in the heart of Stellenbosch. The new space aims to be a welcoming hub and enhance a sense of community between students, club members, innovators, and freelancers in the neighbourhood.

The ample open industrial space with many windows and concrete columns has been given a casual and cosy appearance by implementing CampusKey’s signature pop of bright colours combined with abundant natural light and a moody industrial edge.

According to owners Chanelle and Fritz Schoon, this will not only be a great meeting place for coffee and a pastry, “We will have local beer & kombucha on tap along with a special selection of wines. We have specially developed a Schoon burger for CampusKey. In addition to that, we will have our current menu on offer, retail items, and a few signature loaves and our pastries.”

For Schoon, the mission is to put real bread back on the table, and today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow. “We want to allow students to make better decisions regarding food choices, their impact on the environment through sustainable agriculture,” says Fritz.

Leon Howell, Managing Director of CampusKey says “The sharing of food has brought people together since the beginning of time. It’s how we make friends, nurture relationships, celebrate milestones, and feel gratitude for life. We believe Schoon’s mission aligns with everything we do at CampusKey

Schoon will officially open their doors in January 2022.
