How to Adult: Real-World Life Skills They Don’t Teach in Class

So, you’ve survived another group project, made peace with your bank balance (sort of), and learned that “defrost” doesn’t mean microwaving for 10 minutes straight. But now it’s time for the real test: adulting. You know, budgetingwriting a CVapplying for jobs, and doing that admin no one warned you about. But don’t panic. We’ve gathered the best tips, tools, and tricks to help you adult like a pro (or at least fake it ‘til you make it).

1. Budgeting Like a Bill Gates

Let’s be honest: your wallet and your wishlist aren’t always in sync. But adulting means learning to manage your money before it manages you.

Tools to Try:

  1. 22seven – SA-based app that links to your bank account and shows where your money goes, automatically.
  2. Splitwise – Ideal for tracking shared expenses with friends or roommates.
  3. YNAB (You Need A Budget) – Next-level budgeting tool to help you plan ahead and save like a grown-up.

Bonus tip: Create a monthly spreadsheet, or download a free budget tracker from Google Sheets.

2. Writing a CV That Doesn’t Suck

You’re talented, ambitious, and ready for the real world, so your CV should reflect that (not your Grade 9 school play cameo).

Tools to Help:

  1. Canva Resume Builder – Easy-to-use templates that make you look like you’ve got your life together.
  2. Zety or Kickresume – AI-powered CV platforms that suggest wording and formats.
  3. ChatGPT – Can help you rewrite or polish your CV, all you gotta do is ask.

Pro tip: Save your CV as a PDF, and always name it professionally (not “CV-final-FORREAL-2.pdf”).

3. Job Hunting Without the Existential Crisis

Finding a job (or internship) can feel overwhelming, but the right platforms and a bit of structure go a long way.

Where to Look:

  1. LinkedIn Jobs – Great for networking and applications. Pro tip: keep your profile up to date!
  2. Indeed South Africa – Filters by city, job type, and entry-level roles.
  3. PNet – Good for graduates and part-time job seekers.
  4. Graduates24 – Perfect for bursaries, learnerships, and internships.
  5. CareerJunction – Broad listing platform with filters by industry.
  6. CampusKey – we have a yearly internship at all our CK locations to get our graduates going! Keep an eye on our socials to apply.

Extra help: Google “[company name] internships South Africa 2026” to uncover hidden gems.

4. Life Admin No One Warned You About (But We Will)

Adulting means booking your own appointments, reading lease agreements, and doing things that make you go “Ugh.” But here’s your crash course.

Admin Essentials:

TASKTIPTOOL
Open a student-friendly bank accountCompare options with low fees and good appsBank Zero, Capitec, FNB Easy
Book a doctor or dentistDon’t wait until it’s an emergencyMyHealth, Hello Doctor
Get your tax numberRequired for most jobsSARS eFiling

No One’s Born Knowing How to Adult (Not Even Your Parents)

You’re not behind. You’re not expected to know it all. Adulting is just a bunch of small wins—figuring out how to send a professional email, pay your bills, land a gig, and do your own laundry without turning everything pink.

So breathe. Bookmark this guide. And remember: you’ve got this.

Still Searching for 2026? Here’s Why Students Choose CampusKey First

If you’re in full-on research mode for your 2026 student digs, we get it. You’ve probably bounced from one website to the next, scoped out the TikToks, cross-checked Google reviews, and asked your cousin’s best friend’s roommate where they stayed. But here’s what thousands of students across South Africa have already discovered:

CampusKey isn’t just where you stay, it’s where your student journey truly begins.

Choosing where to live during uni is a big deal. Behind the Trends: What Gen Z Really Wants from Student Living

Today’s student isn’t just looking for a bed and four walls. Gen Z, born roughly between 1997‑2012, comes with fresh expectations shaped by technology, sustainability, wellness and community. To design stellar student living experiences (and to attract them!), it helps to get under what really matters. In this article we unpack the top trends, backed by recent research, and what CampusKey can do to lead the pack.

What Defines Gen Z’s Expectations

Tech‑Enabled Convenience

  1. For Gen Z, digital is not optional, it’s baseline. High‑speed WiFi, biometric controlled access, digital payments, and features they can manage from their phone are highly valued. (Spaces4Learning)
  2. Buildings without smart access control (keyless entry, smartphone entry, etc.) are less competitive. butterflymx.com)

Flexibility & Affordability

  1. Flexible leases (semester‑based, shorter terms), and value for money are crucial. With rising living costs, Gen Z expects good returns on what they pay. (Newbie Real Estate Investors)
  2. Amenities are nice, but if cost or flexibility suffer, many will choose more basic but well‑priced options. (Newbie Real Estate Investors)

Wellness, Privacy & Safety

  1. Wellness‑oriented amenities: fitness centres, quiet study spaces, good air quality, natural light, green spaces and nature nearby, these are being expected more and more. (2Multi-Housing News)
  2. Increased demand for privacy: private bedrooms or at least better loads of privacy, acoustic insulation, fewer shared bathrooms, or more self‑contained bathrooms.
  3. Safety features: secure access, 24/7 security, well‑lit common areas, reliable maintenance. (Multi-Housing News)

Community & Social Connection

  1. Gen Z may be digitally native, but many still crave in person connection. Common spaces, social lounges, group kitchens, co‑working areas, multipurpose lounges where social, academic, and relaxation functions combine are valuable. (The Lawrence Group)
  2. Shared experiences matter: events, student clubs or programming in the residence, roommate matching, etc. (Banc)

Sustainability & Purpose

  1. Gen Z tends to care about environmental impact. Sustainable building materials, energy efficiency, solar energy, green spaces, recycling, etc., often improve appeal.
  2. However, many students are not willing to pay a large premium for sustainability, as cost pressures are real. ( Newbie Real Estate Investors)

Design, Layout & Aesthetic Trends

  1. “Alone‑Together” Spaces: Spots where you can be with others but still maintain a sense of privacy e.g. quiet nooks, solo study pods in shared lounges. (The Lawrence Group)
  2. Flexible / Multipurpose Spaces: Rooms that adapt to different uses: studying, group work, social events. Furniture arrangements that support change.( Spaces4Learning)
  3. Green & Healthy Design: Natural light, views/outdoor green spaces, good ventilation; acoustic design to minimise noise. (Spaces4Learning+2The Lawrence Group)

Where the Gap Often Is (What Students Say They’re Missing)

  1. Communication & Transparency: Gen Z expects clear, frequent, honest communication, especially around billing, maintenance, what is included, and what to expect. jturnerresearch.com
  2. Timely Maintenance & Cleanliness: Delays or issues with upkeep are sore points. Clean communal areas matter. jturnerresearch.com
  3. Proximity: Close to campus, public transport, shops, social infrastructure. Commuting adds stress, time, cost. Newbie Real Estate Investors+2butterflymx.com

What This Means for CampusKey

At CampusKey, we don’t just track trends, we anticipate them, listen deeply to student needs, and translate those insights into action. The preferences of Gen Z aren’t theoretical for us, they’re the foundation of how we design, build, and deliver student living. Every residence, every room layout, every social space, every digital touchpoint is crafted with intention to meet the real expectations of today’s students.

From flexible leasing and fast WiFi to wellness-driven environments, smart access, and events that actually bring people together we’ve already embedded these essentials into the CampusKey experience. We know that Gen Z wants a space that’s more than accommodation. They want community, ease, connection, creativity, and a sense of purpose. And we’ve built CampusKey to deliver all of that, beautifully, seamlessly, and consistently.

The future of student living isn’t coming. It’s already here. And it lives at CampusKey.

CampusKey Mentor Programme: Lead, Connect, Inspire

At CampusKey, we don’t just offer student accommodation, we create a lifestyle. A big part of that experience is the CampusKey Mentor Programme, a student leadership initiative designed to support, uplift and connect students across all our locations.

Whether it’s helping a new student settle in, planning community-building events, or leading wellness initiatives, our mentors are the heart of our vibrant campus communities.

What Is the CampusKey Mentor Programme?

The CampusKey Mentor Programme is an annual leadership opportunity open to returning students who want to get more involved in residence life. Our mentors are passionate student leaders who represent the CampusKey brand, foster inclusive communities, and drive meaningful impact through peer-to-peer connection.

Each mentor takes on one of seven specialised portfolios, allowing them to focus on areas they’re most passionate about, whether that’s mental health, academics, or creating social media content. This isn’t just a great opportunity for students to make a difference, it’s also a powerful leadership development experience that looks great on any CV.

Meet the 7 CampusKey Mentor Portfolios

Each mentor portfolio addresses a specific area of student life, ensuring that all our residents are supported, engaged, and inspired throughout their CampusKey journey:

1. Student Wellbeing

These mentors champion mental health and emotional wellness. From mindfulness sessions to chill check-ins, they make sure everyone has someone to talk to and a space to feel heard.

2. Sports & Wellness

Focused on movement and motivation, this portfolio brings energy to our campuses. Mentors organise sports challenges, weekend workouts, and promote healthy living.

3. Academic Support

Because success starts with support, these mentors help fellow students stay on top of their studies through group sessions, exam tips, and motivation during crunch time.

4. Social & Events

The heartbeat of the community. These mentors plan our most exciting events, themed parties, games nights, welcome-back socials, and everything in between.

5. Kindness Factory (Social Responsibility)

This portfolio is all about giving back. Mentors lead community impact initiatives like donation drives, volunteering days, and awareness campaigns that make a difference outside our walls.

6. Brand Ambassador

Living the CK lifestyle and loving it. These mentors help bring our brand to life on and off campus, proudly representing what CampusKey stands for and initiate marketing initiatives.

7. Social Media & Content

TikTok trends? Insta-worthy moments? These mentors have it covered. They capture and share real stories from our spaces to inspire and engage students across our digital platforms.

Why It Matters: Real Impact, Real Growth

The Mentor Programme doesn’t just benefit the mentors, it improves student life across CampusKey. Our mentors are an essential support system, helping new and r residents feel seen, heard, and included.

And for those in the programme, it’s a chance to build leadership skills, gain experience in event planning, content creation, community building, and more. Many of our former mentors have gone on to exciting career paths, using their CK mentor experience as a springboard.

Revolutionising Student Housing Investing with Purpose

The student accommodation sector in South Africa is undergoing a shift. As university enrolment rises, so does the demand for living spaces that are safe, well-connected, and designed specifically for student needs. Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) is no longer a niche market, it’s fast becoming a cornerstone of both real estate investment and student success. At CampusKey, we are proud to be at the forefront of this change, integrating purpose, design, and community into everything we do.

The PBSA Opportunity: Market Trends & Growth

  1. According to Grand View Research, the South African student accommodation market generated R2.72 billionin revenue in 2024 (USD 155.4 million) and is expected to reach R3.2 billion (USD 182.2 million) by 2030, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 2.8%. PBSA was the largest segment by revenue in 2024. (Grand View Research)
  1. An article from REI.co.za notes that South Africa has a shortage of over 500,000 student beds, pointing out that demand far outpaces supply in many university towns.( rei.co.za)
  1. Gen Z students value more than just proximity to campus, they expect high-speed internet, strong security, wellness, shared social spaces, and flexible, inclusive pricing. Trends from RLB’s Innovative Student Housingreport reinforce how younger students are pushing developers to innovate.( RLB | Oceania

CampusKey’s Purpose-Driven Approach

CampusKey doesn’t just follow these market trends, we build them into our DNA:

  1. Design & Comfort: Fully furnished private rooms, ensuite bathrooms, shared kitchens, study zones, and social hubs. By designing around the student lifestyle, we deliver stronger retention, lower vacancy, and long-term stability for investors
  2. All-Inclusive & Transparent: Utilities, WiFi, security, amenities—no surprise fees. Students know what they pay for and what to expect.
  3. Community & Support: From study lounges to events to in-room support, CampusKey aims to foster connections and well-being—not just physical infrastructure.

Why Investing with Purpose Pays Off

  1. Stable Demand + Low VacancyStudent numbers continue to grow, but accommodation remains in short supply. PBSA properties near campuses with good amenities tend to have high occupancy and lower turnover.
  2. Attractive Returns with Social ImpactInvestors gain not only financial returns but also the benefit of contributing to better student outcomes—through wellness, safety, and community.
  3. Differentiation Through InnovationAmenities like biometric or keyless access, strong tech infrastructure, wellness spaces, and social areas are no longer “nice-to-haves”—they’re essential. CampusKey integrates them to stay ahead.
  4. Aligned with Policy & Public GoodPBSA and public–private partnerships are increasingly supported by government policy. This alignment reduces regulatory risk and increases access to funding or incentives.( World Bank)

What the Future Holds

  1. Continued growth in major university towns — especially where students move from rural or distant areas for study.
  2. Increasing investment in “smart” buildings: energy-efficient design, strong internet, safety features, and multifunctional common spaces.
  3. More inclusive pricing models and flexible leases to meet varied student financial capacities.

CampusKey’s roadmap already includes several developments built specifically for Gen Z in mind—units sized between ~21-30sqm, social hubs, fitness zones, tech infrastructure, and well-located properties in cities students prefer.

The future of student accommodation is purpose-built. PBSA is proving itself as a resilient, high-impact asset class in South Africa—combining social need with stable returns. At CampusKey, we’re building more than residences; we’re building homes, communities, and futures worth investing in.

What Makes CampusKey Different? (Besides the Free WiFi and Really Good Coffee)

Let’s be real — these days, “student accommodation” can mean anything from a glorified shoebox with a sink, to a party hostel with WiFi. But at CampusKey, we’ve built something that actually works for students, for parents, and for our own team.

Here’s the secret: we don’t just rent rooms. We’ve built an entire internal engine that powers everything from check-in to check-out. It’s strategic, it’s thoughtful, and yes, it looks really good on Instagram. So what actually makes us different from every other building with a bed and a biometric lock? Buckle up.

The Experience Team (AKA The Fun Engineers)

We’ve got a whole team dedicated to student vibes. No, seriously. Our national Experience Team is responsible for the moments that make you say, “This doesn’t feel like res.” From braai nights and mental health check-ins to study sesions that somehow include pizza, these guys live and breathe Gen Z culture, and they know how to turn small moments into big memories.

“If it feels like a party and your mental health is improving… we probably planned it.”

In-House Architect + Experience Designer

While most buildings are designed by people in suits who haven’t met a student since 2003, ours are imagined by a team who actually gets student life.

We’re talking cozy study corners, social nooks, kitchens that aren’t depressing, and natural light in all the right places. The goal? Spaces that feel like home, without the questionable flatmate smells.

Our Graphic Designer Is On Speed Dial

You know that feeling when everything just looks right? That’s because we have an in-house graphic designer who makes sure our brand isn’t just consistent, it’s cool. Whether it’s a new rebooking campaign or the menu at CK Mini, every touchpoint is carefully crafted to make you double tap and maybe even screenshot.

Community Strategy That Actually Has a Strategy

Let’s face it: community doesn’t happen on its own. That’s why we’ve built a nationwide strategy that’s executed locally by our CCMCs (that’s Campus Community & Marketing Coordinators, but also Chaos Coordinators if we’re being honest).

They run events, build relationships, and create spaces where people actually get to know each other. Not in a cheesy forced-fun way, in a “hey, this is my second fam” kind of way. “Connection isn’t optional, it’s the whole point.”

Why Do We Do It All In-House?

Because speed, consistency and actual teamwork matter when you’re building something great. Outsourcing might save a few bucks, but doing it in-house means our teams talk to each other, react quickly, and create stuff that makes sense across architecture, design, experience and marketing. Also… no one loves a 3-week email thread with a freelancer about font sizes. Just saying.

Great student living isn’t just about the room. It’s about the rhythm, the feel, the people, the spark. We’re not building student accommodation. We’re building student experiences, from the inside out.

Smart Money Moves as a Student (for Real)

Budgeting sounds boring – until you realise it’s the key to affording late-night pizza and that last-minute Uber to campus.

Here’s your no-fluff guide to keeping your cash flow cute, your lifestyle balanced, and your bank account in the green.

Step 1: Know What’s Coming In

Before you can budget, know your vibe (aka your income):

  1. Study allowance, bursaries, part-time gigs
  2. Scholarship money (break it down monthly, don’t get too excited all at once)
  3. Help from family or holiday job savings

Spoiler: If you don’t know your income, your budget is a guessing game.

Step 2: Track Where It’s Going

Start tracking your spend this week. Yes, all of it. Yes, even that iced coffee. Essentials: rent, food, transport, data, laundry Extras: takeaways, Netflix, club entries, “just one more” Mr D order

Five minutes. Once a week. Big difference.

Step 3: Weekly Budget = Big Brain Energy

Don’t wait for your card to decline to figure out your money plan. Set a weekly split:

WhatHow Much
Essentials50–70%
Fun & Social15–30%
Savings & Extras10–20%

This way, you’re sorted for rent and still vibing at the braai.

Need help getting started? Check out this YouTube budgeting guide for students: https://youtu.be/UGW-vZDSd2k?si=lSbDovXIjTcAsIYT.

Step 4: Pick Your Budgeting Style

Your money, your method:

  1. Zero-based: Every rand gets a job. Nothing floats.
  2. 50/30/20: Easy-peasy. Needs, wants, savings.
  3. Cash jar method: Pull out your “fun money” in cash. No overspending, no regrets.

Whether it’s an app, a Google Sheet, or a handwritten list on your mirror, just do you.

Step 5: Rework Weekly

Life happens. One week you’re chilling, the next your friend’s birthday hits your wallet hard.

Adjust every Sunday—reset, recalculate, repeat.

Bonus Tips That Work

  1. Use Checkers Sixty60 and catch those student specials
  2. Split your streaming subs with your crew (we see you, Netflix sharers 👀)
  3. Cook in batches = more meals, less cost
  4. Download VarsityVibe for legit student discounts
  5. Even R50/week saved = R2 600 in a year. Wild.

CK’s 3-Step Budget Challenge:

  1. Track your cash for 7 days
  2. Build a weekly budget and stick to it
  3. Reassess on Sunday—adjust where needed

A budget doesn’t mean no fun—it means more freedom.

More freedom to say yes to nights out, trips home, or spontaneous ice cream with the squad.

Let CampusKey support your glow-up—budgeting hacks included.
